Harold Evans continues, "Could it not make out with another adjective for a decade or two, deepen our depression by linking with the catalog of deadly d words, disintegrating, dilapidated, decaying, or just rot and collapse? Better, is it beyond the wit of writers to get out from under the Latin infra and remind us that the abstractions covers a multitude of sins-- corroded water pipes, leaking dams, archaic airports, decrepit overhead power cables?"
Harold is pointing out a tired phrase, "crumbling infrastructure." Our language is spilling over with similar threadbare adjectives and nouns.
If your experience is similar to mine, it's really, really hard to avoid them. Especially when you're tired or working under the strain of an imminent deadline.
Of course, there are ways to cope. A good way to increase self-awareness of my own tired language is to read books like "Do I Make Myself Clear? Why Writing Well Matters," by Harold Evans. One of the best parts of the book so far (in my opinion) is the content of the footnotes which link to helpful websites which offer writing exercises and articles on writing well.
There are also sites like Unsuck-it.com, which lists tired corporate idioms to avoid using in your business copy. Lisa Kellaway's Golden Flannel Awards measure the depth of corporate guff.
Grammarly also keeps me on my toes-- less stylistically and more, well, grammatically. I took a look at my stats recently and found my top mistake was missing a comma after an introductory clause. I've done it 124 times. Yikes!

I just bought my own domain name. It took me much longer than it should have, and now my own website has a fresh, professional address that it lacked before.
It can be scary to invest in your business. There’s a nagging fear that you won’t get the money back.
The truth is, making that room in your budget can be the extra polish your business needs to succeed.
Of course, I’m not recommending that you spend money you don’t have.
That’s why I made another small business investment this week. I bought a subscription to an accounting service. Subscribing to a service like QuickBooks, FreshBooks or Zoho can make it easy to keep track of your business’s cash flow, write invoices, and do your taxes. Knowing exactly what money is coming in and going out of your accounts takes the fear and guesswork out of your business strategy.
It’ll also help inform you on what to charge for your services. Maybe after balancing your business checkbook you realize you need to charge more per word, more per hour, or more per graphic. That realization can be the kick your confidence needs to set a fair price for your services.
Invest in your business. It will motivate you to seek better clients, to keep track of your expenses, and to request a worthy price.

Our eyes don't move across a webpage thoroughly from left to right in the same way that they do when we're reading the page of a book.
Our brain has adapted the way we read webpages to glean information efficiently.
The Nielsen Norman Group has identified four major scanning patterns.
It's good to know the scanning patterns for copywriting so you can format your text to reach your readers. Most articles are best formatted under the assumption that the reader will be using an F-shaped, Layer-Cake, or Spotted scanning pattern.

Small talk is vulnerable to disparagement. “I hate small talk,” “Small talk is such a superficial form of communication,” “I only like to have deep conversations,”
What is small talk? It’s conversation about light topics, like the weather, the football game, the lunch you’re having at work. It is not deep in itself but it is deeply important.
Small talk shows our concern for others without violating their boundaries. Discussions with others do not need to be “deep” to be valuable.
It’s inappropriate to discuss your latest existential crisis with your boss. But to ask her about her commute or to share a comment about the weather is courteous. It displays your consideration of her well-being.
The same goes for your conversation with the cashier at the grocery store, the doctor, the person in front of you in line-- anyone who is a fellow human being but who is not intrinsically entitled to conversational intimacy with you.
The art of small talk is valuable. It’s just as important as knowing how to open doors for people behind us, or as important as knowing when to say please and thank you. Cultivate your small talk skills to express kindness to others on a daily basis.
Engaging in small talk is part of sitting in the presence of another human being for a moment and enjoying their existence. You don’t have to be close to someone to have meaningful communication with them. Small talk proves that.
After I picked up my bags at the checkout lane in Sprouts yesterday the cashier bowed with his hands folded. “Namaste!”
At first this interaction made me giggle, but it stayed with me. It was unique to his way of expressing himself. True kindness has a way of personalizing itself.
It also has a way of crossing barriers. There are all kinds of barriers around communication, like language, emotional background, etc. Written words on the internet are a great communication pathway, but they also pose a barrier because they lack some of the nuances of personal communication.
It takes extra thoughtfulness to be kind online. I’ve been working with a great copy editor recently, and his communication style has inspired me to be more careful with my words online. When he asks for a revision, he’ll first thank me for my work. He’s specific about what he likes about my work and what can be improved. It makes revising much more palatable because I’m clear about the direction I’m going.
Online thoughtfulness is more than just kind words. It’s about anticipating the different ways your words can be interpreted, and thinking through the consequences.
If it’s important for us to think before we speak, it’s doubly important for us to think before we type.
There’s no second chance-- we can’t interpret our audience’s facial reaction and say “Wait, let me clarify!” It’s important that the first time we write we make our message objectively clear and kind.
There’s a lot of talk about how to individualize your brand.
What better way to individualize yourself online than to be kind and thoughtful? Thoughtfulness makes us unique because it requires consideration of the unique needs of your listener. Every time you interact with someone it gives you a chance to be creative. The relationship you build between yourself, another person, or your audience is special because it can be replicated by no one but yourselves.
Treat your online relationships with respect by communicating thoughtfully; consequently you’ll differentiate yourself in the best way possible.

As the New York Times notes, therapists are the new Insta-poets. They are posting short, inspirational blurbs and raising awareness of themselves as therapists.
It's important to note that these posts do not legally count as therapy.
It's often not legal to provide therapy over state lines, and the substance in these posts, while impactful, has a short-term effect compared to regular therapy sessions.
In fact, I view them more as inspiration, kind of like a self-help book divided into bite-size pieces.
Not all of the authors jumping on the mini-inspiration trend are even therapists-- many are creators focused on sharing their tips for a more thoughtful life.
Filling your Instagram feed with wholesome content will propel you towards conscious Instagram usage. Following these inspiration accounts is a great start towards curating for a better social media experience.
An unbiased report I wrote on a new distracted driving ordinance in the city of Tempe.
Report on the Update of the Distracted Driving Ordinance in Tempe, Arizona
On the 28th of February, 2019, the council of the city of Tempe updated an ordinance
regarding the penalties for distracted driving related to the unlawful use of a mobile electronic
device. Using a mobile electronic device while driving is now a primary offense.
Ordinance No. O2019.7 now states that anyone holding, typing, or otherwise manually
operating a mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle, unless that motor vehicle
is parked or stopped, is guilty of a civil violation and subject to a fine. This fine is equal to $100
plus penalty assessment for the first offense, and goes up to $250 and $500 plus penalty
assessments for the second and third offenses, respectively.
Ordinance No. O2019.7 has several exceptions, most of which are associated with emergency
personnel or emergency situations. Drivers using commercial radios, licensed radios, and
mobile electronic devices in hands-free mode are also excepted from the penalties.
Beyond outlining these penalties and exceptions, the ordinance declared a state of emergency
due to the potential fatalities caused by distracted driving.
Mark W. Mitchell (D), the mayor of Tempe, signed the document, which was attested by Brigitta
M. Kuiper, City Clerk, and Judith R. Baumann, City Attorney.
The Tempe City Council is composed of seven elected council members including the Mayor.
According to the charter of the city of Tempe, power is granted to these members to make
policy, and power is also granted to the Mayor to declare a state of emergency.

There are transitions everywhere.
Our planet undergoes transitions, orbiting as it creates the solar year, tilting on its axis as it creates the seasons, spinning on its axis as it creates day and night. Within every day it returns the same face to the sun, within every year it returns to the same angle of its axis, and again within every year it returns to the same place in its orbit.
All life enters into the flow of reproduction, growing, conceiving, birthing, and dying. Each life form participates in this cycle, participates in this regular pattern even as it shifts.
Your own period cycle is a beautiful reflection of the cycles of the universe.
Your period is a vibrant vital sign. It is evidence that your body is united with the cycles of the universe. Your period is a healthy and beautiful time of month.
Feel the movement of the deep inner muscles of the uterus. They are coordinated. They are powerful. Give them permission to move, to work, to expand and contract.
Your body is endowed with deep wisdom concerning its needs. Notice what your body is telling you.
During your period, your body thirsts for the liquids it requires while it does its work. It signals its thirst through dry mouth and headaches. Nourish your body with calming liquids.
Your body sends you fatigue to ask for rest during your period. Give it sleep.
Your body asks for chocolate, green vegetables, and proteinaceous meats and cheeses to maintain itself now and replenish itself later with new tissue once this part of the cycle is over. Feed your body the nutrients it needs.
Your body’s inner muscles pressure you, signaling a need for oxygen. Fill your blood vessels with oxygen by exercising generously.
Your body and its period are in sync.
